3Wire builds thriving business with HighJump WMS

HighJump recently caught up with Tom Dahlstrom, manager of enterprise applications at 3Wire, a warehouse management system (WMS) client for 15-plus years. We were excited to get an update on the business and learn more about how HighJump has supported the company’s steady growth.

Give us a little background on 3Wire.

3Wire is a Marmon/Berkshire Hathaway company and a leading supplier of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts and supply chain solutions to some of the most demanding customers in the beverage and restaurant/hospitality industries. We’re headquartered in Osseo, Minn., with strategically placed distribution centers across the country. We source over 190,000 SKUs from over 700 OEMs to make sure we always have what our customers need.

How long has 3Wire been using HighJump™ Warehouse Advantage WMS?

We first implemented the solution right after the company was founded in 2001. I’m happy to report HighJump WMS has allowed us to effectively and efficiently manage our wide-spanning inventory ever since.

How has your HighJump WMS application functionality and deployment changed since initial deployment?

When we first selected HighJump to be our WMS partner, 3Wire had just one facility providing OEM parts for the beverage dispense industry. As our company grew into new markets, so did our WMS, and it adapted quickly to the new requirements. That allowed us to deliver value to all customers, both internal and external.

What are the biggest benefits you’ve seen with HighJump WMS?

In my eyes, the features that truly separate HighJump from the competition are the flexibility and ease of in-house development. Not only is it flexible enough to adapt to our workflows in the first place, but we can make these changes ourselves. Similar warehouse management systems require a strong background in programming to tailor the software to specific business needs. Luckily, that’s not the case for us.

Could you provide a few examples of how 3Wire has taken advantage of HighJump WMS’ adaptability?

Sure. A few things I’ve come across:

      • We were able to eliminate a few extra steps in our picking workflow by integrating mobile label printers. We implemented the printers and updated our picking process in HighJump in a matter of days and we quickly saw efficiency gains and fewer errors.
      • HighJump’s toolset (Architect and WebWise) allows my team to quickly brainstorm ideas, put code behind them and test those ideas without weeks of planning. Since the application versioning is being managed effectively by the HighJump toolset, we can roll back code with ease.

Learn what distinguishes HighJump WMS from other options and why our WMS is the last system you will ever buy.

Did you find it easy to train employees on the system?

Absolutely! We measure the productivity of new hires and see value in hours – not days or weeks.  HighJump’s solution allows us to control what activities a user can access. That means a supervisor can train an end user without fear of overwhelming them with too many things at once.

What has your experience been like upgrading the HighJump platform and what are your future upgrade plans?

We’ve completed several upgrades over the years, the last major one being from version 8.0 to 10.5. Having a software partner that is continuously improving its product makes upgrading the platform easy to justify because every release includes new features and functionality. We are currently planning our next upgrade to the HighJump One platform and look forward to leveraging the new HTML5 interface in our DCs.

How would you describe 3Wire’s relationship with HighJump over the years?

We’ve had a great relationship with HighJump for many years now. I know they’re there when we need them and will be there for us for a long time to come.

What advice would you give to anyone considering the purchase of a new WMS?

I think the best single piece of advice is to look beyond the initial investment in your warehouse management system. You need to understand the true costs of owning and adapting your WMS to the ever-changing needs of your business.

We would like to sincerely thank Tom and 3Wire for taking the time to share their experience with HighJump. We look forward to your continued success as an OEM parts and supply chain solutions provider!
